In Language Arts, we are beginning with a unit entitled "Messages." We are exploring many of the outcomes laid out in the Saskatchewan ELA Curriculum throughout this multi-genre, thematic unit. Students will brainstorm the multitude of ways in which we communicate with one another, in addition to how messages have an impact on our lives. They'll explore the concept of spreading messages through the traditional First Nations approach of story telling and using a talking circle, and then narrow their focus to learning about messages in the media and how advertisements are used to affect people.
Guided reading and Daily Five are an integral part of our
Language Arts program. All students will be placed into levelled
reading groups to learn key reading strategies using texts that are at
their level. Flexible groupings will accommodate for growth throughout
the year. Synthesis will be a focal reading strategy in grade six, but
students will also be introduced to evaluating and will extend their
knowledge on predicting, connecting, visualizing, and questioning.
